Frequently Asked Questions
What you really want to know
How often should I replace my battery?
Good quality Swiss batteries last an average of 2 years. Most quartz watches make use of an E-O-L (end of life) feature, which makes the second hand only step every 5 seconds. If a watch has more frequent battery changes than usual, it could suggest a higher than average consumption caused by excess friction in the gear train.
How often should I check my gaskets and water resistance?
It is good measure to have your gaskets (caseback, crown, pushers and crystal) checked, lubricated and pressure tested on an annual basis. This ensures a reliable seal against the elements at any given moment. The rate at which gaskets and o-rings deteriorate is also dependant on user activity type, frequency and intensity.
How often should I service my watch?
The most commonly asked question does not have a definite answer and has a lot of factors that need to be taken into account. The wear patterns, movement type, brand and functions vary, so does the service interval. A general rule of thumb is every 4-6 years for mechanical watches.
What does a service entail for my wristwatch?
The complete service of a mechanical watch consists of eight standard procedures:

1. Inspection and assessment 2. Disassembly 3. Cleaning 4. Replacement of worn or damaged parts
5. Reassembly 6. Lubrication 7. Regulation and testing 8. Gaskets and Pressure testing

How much does it cost to service my wristwatch?
Pricing of services vary greatly between different brands, movements and the age of a given wristwatch.

Services start at R2 499 and range up to R17 499.
Refinishing services start at R999 and range to R3 999.
Most restoration services start at R2 999.
How long does a typical service take?
Our average lead time from receiving your timepiece to collection takes about 14-21 days depending on the services rendered and/or the availibility of spare parts.

Restoration services have a slightly longer lead time of 21-29 days due to the fabrication of parts and the individual requirements of each project.

Every watch that is serviced at Meyer & Co. is covered by a 2-year gaurantee from date of collection.
